At the root of this I think there is a strong difference in worldview between people who are let's say very optimistic about the potential of technology, and those who are less optimistic.
People get into these discussions of specific predictions with their worldviews motivating the evaluation of the predictions. That's why you have strong disagreements about what ostensibly would be a fairly objective measures. Because people see the world in radically different ways.
There are different variations of views towards technology but at the extremes you have "true believers" and what I would call "haters".
