Most computers have an in-hardware function to cut power if you hold the power button down.


In lower level software at any rate. The power button certainly doesn't have a mechanical switch that takes four seconds to actuate.


It's not really software. Electronics yes, software no. At least, AFAIK.


I'm pretty sure it's bios mediated on computers.


From a bit of reading around, prompted by your reply, it would seem that you are correct. The 4/5-second action can be reprogrammed in many BIOS systems. Ugh.
