My impression always was that the problem with C++ is the high skill/brain cost in relation to usable ability payoff… which makes a limited talent pool a logical consequence.

(What I mean by that is — comparatively speaking, C++ has a much larger set of things that you need to know, understand, and apply correctly to get the same kind of thing done relative to other languages.)
