When I was in 9th grade, shortly before I was due to get braces, my teeth were quite crooked, and someone pointed out (in front of a lot of my friends) that they thought it looked grotesque when I laughed or smiled. It had a lasting negative effect on me, even after the braces came off and I had a great smile.
