Reddit went downhill after a month of a ton of people writing Ask Reddit posts. I'm not saying we have that problem, but usually, the presence of a topic like this is just taking away from an external news story.

I already penalize Ask HN posts (or more precisely, url-less ones) significantly in the ranking algorithm. That seems to keep them from taking over the front page.
